Body Protection Compound isolated from human gastric juice. Over 150 peer-reviewed papers since the early 1990s.
Origin
BPC-157 is a partial sequence of Body Protection Compound, a protein first isolated from human gastric juice by Croatian researchers. The pentadecapeptide was identified and characterized at the University of Zagreb in the early 1990s as a stable fragment of the parent protein.
Research Lineage
Dr. Predrag Sikiric and his team at the University of Zagreb Department of Pharmacology have published over 150 peer-reviewed papers on this compound. Research spans gastric cytoprotection, musculoskeletal tissue, and vascular function in preclinical models. It remains one of the most extensively studied peptides in the repair research literature.
Mechanism of Action
BPC-157 has been observed to interact with the nitric oxide (NO) system and modulate growth hormone receptor expression in preclinical studies. It has been investigated for its effects on angiogenesis, granulation tissue formation, and collagen organization in animal models. Researchers have noted interactions with multiple growth factor pathways including VEGF, FGF, and EGF in vitro.
Structural Notes
Pentadecapeptide. Sequence: Gly-Glu-Pro-Pro-Pro-Gly-Lys-Pro-Ala-Asp-Asp-Ala-Gly-Leu-Val. Molecular weight: 1419.53 Da. Stable in human gastric juice — does not degrade under acidic conditions.
